The Stranger

Crossing the Divide by Kathryn Madill
(25 November - 20 December 2008)

Following Kathryn’s successful show in 2005 of paintings based on her trip to Antarctica, Crossing the Divide comprises six large oil paintings on traditional gesso panels, each incorporating a silent progression of travellers on the cusp of an unidentified journey – poised at the water’s edge or on a mountain pass, fleeing for their lives or crossing into a darker realm. A strong sense of myth and a theatrical sense of isolation permeate these unspoken tales of flight. The artist’s use of rich, gleaming colour, the fading light, the inherent symbolism, the surreal cast of characters, the bleakness and the beauty of these paintings make Crossing the Divide a remarkable collection of new work.
