Featured Artist: Marcus Capes
'Untitled' 2009 by Marcus Capes English born artist Marcus Capes explores the physical concerns of surface and materiality in his approach to the enduring themes of nationalism, commodification, consumerism and globalisation. His use of graphite and enamel creates a smooth tactile surface akin to that of marble or pewter from which he “builds” with an almost architectural mindset his intriguing geometric abstractions. His selection of design elements, close to but not exact replications of iconic symbols of nationhood or commercial branding, are further complicated through the subtle suggestions of three-dimensionality, shadow and light, positive and negative space. Trained at the University of Bradford, Capes was a finalist in both the 2009 COCA Anthony Harper Contemporary Art Award 2009 and the 2008 Trust Waikato National Contemporary Art Award. After spending five years in New Zealand he has recently returned to his home in Norfolk, England.
