Mark Braunias

Auckland/Kawhia artist Mark Braunias has established his reputation as a painter at the fore of issues of personal identity in the 20th and 21st centuries. His works use ironic humour, mechanisation and Disney-esque figures to question the role of the individual in a world silenced by the roar of industry and popular media - works influenced by frequent visits to Europe and several decades of international cartoon art. In their silent study on society, his figures peer solemnly, silently at the world of the viewer, pathos and ignorance swimming in a backdrop frantic with colour or imploding into darkness. Mark has recently completed a series of gallery based installations around teh countries major art galleries.
