Stephen Clarke

English-born Christchurch-based artist Stephen Clarke has continually straddled the barriers of new art media to express his personal insight into humanity and mythology. One of the country's pioneers in the field of computer-engendered art, Stephen's recent work explores early Christian myths and their relevance to our society today. Whatever the factual basis of the Christian stories, there is no denying the role they have served, and for many continue to serve, what Stephen refers to as, "the unerring desire among men to be righteous". Our culture, he maintains, is strengthened by the coherence - rather than historical accuracy - of the doctrines on which it is founded - "When the construct becomes part of collective reality, we have no further need for the truth."
