Michael Dell

Michael Dell was born on Banks Peninsula in 1960. He began painting in watercolour in 1983 and received several awards over the following years. He graduated from the School of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury in 1994 with a major in printmaking. Since then Dell’s drawings and paintings have appeared in solo and group exhibitions in Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, Auckland and Japan.

Dell’s precise depiction of everyday objects enlists an objective, three-dimensional realism while also alluding to the drawing hand that connects the artist to the subject matter.

"The objects within the work are usually unspectacular and anonymous, having a neutral, often banal quality. In arranging these objects into various tablescapes I attempt to create a sense of stillness where everything is completely motionless" – Michael Dell
