City Art is a conservation framing workshop and gallery offering a range of museum-standard picture framing and art care services to artists, art collectors, museums and galleries.
Framing:
City Art has a range of unique frames made on the premises and finished to meet your requirements and those of your artwork. Whether it is a simple timber shadow frame or an ornate gilded frame City Art will work with you to reach a framing solution to complement your work. City Art mouldings are first profiled in our machine shop by our qualified timber machinist. They are then cut to size, joined and sanded to a fine finish. The frame can then be stained, sealed and wax polished; be given a contemporary gesso finish; be lacquered to a colour of choice; be hand-gilded with imitation, (shlarg/composition) leaf or genuine gold or silver leaf; or have traditional ornaments applied before the gilding begins.
Since 1989 City Art has specialised in conservation framing, working with conservators and researching framing processes to ensure the highest quality methods and materials are used. All techniques used are of a museum standard – art works are hinged in such a way to minimise damage in the case of an accident and to allow for easy reversal of the framing process. Art works are not trimmed, folded, stapled, pressed against the glass or subjected to commercial tapes or glues. All materials used are of an archival standard that do not leach chemicals into the art work. An increasing selection of glazing materials enables us to offer a variety of choices, including museum standard UV-filtering reflection control glass. The entire framing process results in the complete encapsulation of your art work within a secure stable environment safe from the damaging effects of dust, mildew, insects or fluctuations in temperature or humidity.
