Michael Hamblett

Points of View - Paintings

“I try to avoid sentimentality and aspire to something other than merely picturesque. I often look to find interest in the ordinary – to make the ordinary interesting. Somewhere I came across the idea of the ‘hallucinatory power of the mundane’. For me much of the interest in painting is in manipulating the various elements to make a unified whole, however simple. As M. T. Woollaston said, each painting involves ‘a crisis and a resolution’. I think that in the making the painting becomes something else – and that what it is, what it becomes, is ultimately indescribable” – Michael Hamblett 2006

"SO MUCH OF EVERY ART IS AN EXPRESSION OF THE SUBCONSCIOUS, THAT IT SEEMS TO ME MOST OF ALL OF THE IMPORTANT QUALITIES ARE PUT THERE UNCONSCIOUSLY, AND LITTLE OF IMPORTANCE BY THE CONSCIOUS INTELLECT"– EDWARD HOPPER, U.S. PAINTER
