city

City Art is a conservation picture framing workshop and gallery offering a range of museum-standard framing and art care services to art buyers, art collectors, museums, galleries and artists. In operation since 1989 we have established a sound reputation for providing practical solutions for the framing, display, installation, transportation or long term storage of works of art and artefacts. We use museum-standard conservation framing procedures to ensure that your artwork is protected and displayed to the best advantage and to the highest safety standards available. We are able to offer our clients a wide selection of picture frame mouldings, cut and joined on the premises and finished with the optimal surface to suit the specific needs of the art work in question – be it a stain, lacqeur, gesso or gold or silver leaf. City Art also manufactures made-to-measure archival Solander storage boxes, artists’ stretchers and purpose-built crates. Our trained staff provide a robust installation system for single works or whole collections, in institutions or in private homes. Our Christchurch workshop also provides a secure storage facility for short or long term care of individual works of art or entire collections. The City Art gallery is an exhibition space representing new works from contemporary artists from around the country.

Current Exhibition: 8 New Paintings by Kathryn Madill

closing of the depot

'Closing of the depot, 2011' by Kathryn Madill

Kathryn Madill is one of New Zealand's leading painters and printmakers. Her paintings, drawings and prints focus on lonely fragments of literature, legend and fairytale. Her more recent oils on canvas and gesso panel show a more poised moment in time, ethereal pictures told in the softly luminous colours of hills, oceans, the grey of day and the bleak darkness of night. If there is any resemblance to the fey fairytales of old, then these are the original pre-Disney tales where the good may die and the bad may live on to whisper into the wind.
