Kathryn Madill

Kathryn Madill is one of New Zealand's leading painters and printmakers. Her paintings, drawings and prints focus on lonely fragments of literature, legend and fairytale. Her more recent oils on canvas and gesso panel show a more poised moment in time, ethereal pictures told in the softly luminous colours of hills, oceans, the grey of day and the bleak darkness of night. If there is any resemblance to the fey fairytales of old, then these are the original pre-Disney tales where the good may die and the bad may live on to whisper into the wind.

In 2005 Kathryn Madill and Christchurch poet Bernadette Hall visited Antarctica as part of the Artists to Antarctica programme. On the White Ice Table (the title is taken from ‘Fissure’, a poem by Bernadette Hall) is a series of works on paper and gesso panel responding to this strange, wind-stripped territory. Vast ice-scapes provide a dramatic backdrop for the small ghost-like figures that leave no footprints on the stark, bloodless environment. The Artists to Antarctica programme is a joint initiative between Antarctica New Zealand and Creative New Zealand.
