City Art is a conservation framing workshop and gallery offering a range of museum-standard picture framing and art care services to artists, art collectors, museums and galleries.
Solander Boxes:
Designed for the safe storage of unframed art works, documents, plans or books, Solander boxes were originally devised by Swedish naturalist Daniel Solander (1733-1782) to hold his botanical specimens.
City Art has adapted the design of the traditional Solander boxes with the use of an inner lining of acid-free museum board to ensure a pH-neutral interior environment and hinges of library buckram to provide a strong support for frequent opening and closing. The distinctive collapsible spine protects paper-borne art works or valuable documents or books from damage caused by overhandling while a barrier layer of conservation grade polyethelene-coated aluminium between the museum board and the plywood exterior ensures off-gassing to the box interior is minimised. The plywood and timber exterior ensures a robust and elegant looking container suitable for long-term storage. These boxes have been used to house art works, precious documents, photographs and books by museums, libraries, galleries and collectors throughout New Zealand.
