Philip Trusttum

For the last 40 years Christchurch artist Philip Trusttum has earned himself a reputation as one of New Zealand's leading painters. His large acrylic works on canvas, often calling on his personal life for inspiration, reveal an ongoing interest in various forms of abstract expressionism. Bold, bright and brimming with energy they show a lust for life that is totally engaging in its vibrancy. His recent work, including the huge 84-metre Passport to a New Millennium mural now in Christchurch's Convention Centre, show his interest in exploring letters and symbols. In his latest work, fragments of works on canvas manipulated on the computer screen, he maintains his trademark passion for colour and energy, as well as his unequivocal mastery of his chosen media.
