About
Shannon Williamson is a Christchurch based visual artist whose practice is dominated by her love of drawing. She graduated with a BFA from the University of Canterbury in 2009 and has exhibited in solo and group shows internationally since 2001. She completed several international artist residencies between 2012-2015 with a focus on groups that orchestrate collaborations between artists and scientists, including Symbiotica Centre of Excellence in Biological Arts (Australia) and Ars Bioartica (Finland). Using pencil, watercolour and gouache Williamson draws loosely on the visual languages of anatomy, astronomy and cartography. Her drawings are pseudo-maps of bodily experience implying a delicate futility in the human quest for order and purpose.
“Made with pencil and gouache, or opaque watercolour, they’re delicate, tough drawings; fraught, but also hopeful” – Felicity Milburn, 2017
