SLOWCHOCK – Scott Jackson
Pulling inspiration from book plates and tarot cards, Scott Jackson presents SLOWCHOCK; a dreamlike body of works that oscillate between feverish and prophetic. Jackson’s often tongue-in-cheek works combine the absurd and the uncomfortable, providing a glimpse into a unique and cryptic world. The macabre yet often humorous subject matter invites the audience to bring a sense of levity to ever increasing uncertainty.
The works, with their amber veils, feel untethered from any singular period or aesthetic, and instead feel as though they have fallen through time and space. Jackson draws upon inspiration freely, fueling his works ambiguity and uncanniness. Reminiscent of doodles from the margins of a notebook, the subject matter is layered heavily with historical and pop culture references, ranging from the Holy Roman Empire to the Talking Heads. The works wormhole-like effect mixes the past, present and future, blatantly disregarding every rule of time travel science fiction has ever taught us. While smaller in stature the dense and layered mark making found in these works pack a punch and reward the audience for taking the time to contemplate their meanings.
